gruesome: (Grue - can't count the fingers.)
The menagerie on the grounds of a secluded estate just outside Gotham was not the sort of zoo where you'd find lions or wolves. No one sold popcorn, no ticket stand stood at the entrance. In fact, from the outside or the air, there was no sign that it was there. There was just a warehouse, painted to fade into the wooded background at the end of its long drive. But inside.

Inside was three stories of ornate cages, like a prison painted over to look like the biggest circus sideshow ever put on, with golden bars and bright-painted murals. Step right up and see the two-headed calf. Except it was a two-headed child, here. And a mermaid who looked half-eel. A man with a hole through his chest where a heart should be. And a maneating monster, in a place of pride at the end of the ground-floor's corridor.

Some, like the other residents of the esoteric zoo, had been bought, through channels he didn't even understand. All he knew was that he'd been passed from captor to captor half his life, and this was the best so far. The man who owned the place was loud and brash, and liked to bring guests to show them his collection, but he at least didn't make any of them fight, or want to touch them. He just liked to have them, and to keep them at any cost.
